As one of the fastest changing fields in medicine, genetics a topic that is coming up more often in more healthcare settings. But highly technical vocabulary and complex medical concepts can present real challenges to interpreters who are not familiar with the concepts and vocabulary related to genetics.

This 8-hour workshop is a special opportunity for interpreters to learn to work in the fast-changing fields of prenatal genetics and pediatric genetics. Developed in collaboration with the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics, this workshop includes: 

• basic concepts in genetics

• the role of the genetic counselor

• what to expect at pediatric genetics appointments

• genetic testing

• genetic syndromes and conditions

• special challenges for interpreters in pediatric genetics. 

We will introduce the technical vocabulary of pediatric genetics in context, and then exercises will help you learn the vocabulary both in English and a non-English language. Finally, interpreting exercises based on real-life pediatric genetic interviews create opportunities for practice. Language-specific glossaries and practice exercises are provided in Spanish, Cantonese, Vietnamese and Arabic.

LOCATION

TIME 

Saturday, November 13th - 10 am to 12 pm [30-min break] and 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm PT.

Saturday, November 20th - 10 am to 12 pm [30-min break] and 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm PT.

This is an 8-hour training that spans over two consecutive Saturdays (half a session in the morning and half a session in the afternoon). Participants who complete the training attend both Saturdays and all sessions.

THE INSTRUCTOR

Cindy Roat, MPH, is a trainer of interpreters, educators and healthcare providers, and a consultant to healthcare facilities, helping them improve their language access services. An internationally renowned trailblazer in the healthcare interpreting field, Cindy is a founding member and past Co-chair of the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care, a founding member of the Washington State Coalition on Language Access (WASCLA), and a former board member of the Northwest Translators and Interpreters Society (NOTIS), where she organizes and teaches workshops for healthcare interpreters. Cindy is widely recognized as an engaging public speaker and assiduous advocate for limited-English-proficient populations.
